Special Visitors for the Holidays
It never ceases to amaze the D2C family how generous and wonderful people can be. Over the Christmas holiday, a group of young Haitian-Americans traveled to Haiti to see the beauty of the country and experience the warmth of the Haitian spirit and culture. After discovering D2C on the internet, Rosey Clervil reached out to us to see if she and her friends/family with whom she was traveling to Haiti could visit the family home and help out in any way that we needed.
When they arrived in Cayes Jacmel, they came bearing Christmas gifts for each of the children. The children lined up as the Rosey’s group distributed gifts that they had purchased based on the ages of the children. The little girls received nail polish sets and spent time happily getting their finger and toenails painted by Rosey and the other females in the group.
The boys received gifts that were tailor made for them including a little hand radio for our music-lover Francisco and a book bag for our stylish, studious Darwen. Fednel received a gift that he had never seen before – a Frisbee! The men in the group taught Fednel and the other boys how to toss the Frisbee and add this new game as an alternate activity for our football (soccer) loving boys!
The men also spent time with our growing tween and teen boys and gave them what is commonly referred to as a “Haitian pep talk” in which adults share their experiences and insights with children. The men discussed the boys’ future, the need for hard work and to focus on becoming a good person; they shared their own experiences as a way to set an example for our growing boys.
Rosey and her group also donated three laptops for our amazing Haitian team – computers that will be used for our organizational work as well as homework, and some movie-watching time for the kids. Diane – our new In-Country Director who is also Haitian-American, shared with Rosey and friends her first impressions of having moved to Haiti only four weeks prior. You will hear more about Diane’s impressions of Haitian life in our next blog post…stay tuned!
All of us at D2C thank Rosey and her friends for reaching out to us, giving the kids a wonderful holiday experience, and sharing both material and spiritual gifts with the kids. Welcome to the family Rosey et al, we look forward to your next visit!
