Devoted to Children is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded over $30,000 from the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation for our emerging Education Access Project! This project is closely aligned with our New School Program. D2C is enormously grateful for the VWCF’s generosity and their confidence in our organizations’ efforts to continue supporting the needs of vulnerable children in Cayes Jacmel, Haiti and to provide them with educational opportunities for a better future.
D2C works to develop strategic partnerships with community-based establishments in order to create sustainable programs that provide children and youth with the education and the skills needed to strengthen their financial independence and break the cycle of extreme poverty. The most successful partnership to come out of this process was with a local private school, St. Anne’s, where D2C founded and continues to run its highly successful After School Tutoring Program (ASP).
St. Anne’s was founded, built and continues to be run by the same dedicated educator. The student body is primarily made up of children and youth living in extreme poverty. As a result, the school is often unable to collect tuition, repair classrooms and pay its staff on time. In order to allow D2C’s ASP to thrive and for St. Anne’s to continue providing affordable and quality education to its students, D2C applied for funding that would ensure that the school remains operational, its classrooms restored and collaboration with parents to help mediate economic and cultural barriers to education.
D2C has seen the excitement and energy of the students in Cayes Jacmel as they yearn to empower themselves though education. D2C wants to ensure that these children and youth are not left behind as Haiti works to develop their economy and future. The generosity of the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation and the hard work of D2C staff are a big step in making that happen.
