Five years have come and gone since the 2010 Haitian Earthquake.
The 7.0 earthquake shook hard the small Caribbean nation, destroying infrastructure and lives. The Haitian Government places the death toll at over 200,000, making the natural disaster one of the worst the contemporary world has seen.
Despite more than $10 billion in humanitarian and development aid there are still roughly 550,000 people living in tent camps (complete squalor). Much of the nation’s population lives in extreme poverty, without access to basic resources. Signs of the quake are still visible today and there continues to be an overwhelming need for support.
While Devoted to Children focuses on sustainable programming and development it is important for our organization to be aware of the risks involved with natural disasters and devote focus to risk mitigation.
The 2015 quake will be a bittersweet scar on Haiti’s history. While it took so much from the already impoverished third-world state, it triggered an international awareness. As humanitarians, we have much to learn in the ways effective and healthy aid, D2C is blessed to be a small part of Haiti’s long-term recovery and bright, bright future.
